Second Chances in Brittany

Second Chances in Brittany

by Anne Morenn · Literary Fiction

Sarah and James retire to Brittany after many years apart while working professionally in different cities. Sarah is expecting a second honeymoon followed by a life of bliss. But James only wants to get hold of Sarah's money. He attempts to have her committed to a psychiatric asylum. Sarah survives only to find herself alone in a foreign country. She survives by reorganising her life to suit herself and by befriending and helping the people she meets. She makes an immediate and lasting impact on the whole community – she is not the only person who experiences a second chance. When she works with Gérard on a project set by the prefecture, he appreciates her so much that he proposes marriage.

Why this book matters

A memoir that refuses to flinch.

We chose The Forbidden Fruit because it does what only the bravest books do — it tells the truth even when the truth is uncomfortable. Tina Scott's story is unflinching, but it is also full of grace, and our readers have responded with rare emotional honesty.

This is the kind of book the Inner Chapter Society exists for: stories that don't just entertain, but change the way we see one another.

A fearless memoir. Painful, redemptive, beautifully composed.

It made me call my mother. That's what a great book does.
